Global Leaders Meet at the NYSE

The New York Stock Exchange occupies a unique place at the nexus of innovation, opportunity, and international reach. Every day at the NYSE is dynamic, helping to move commerce forward. Typically what happens here on any given day falls into three categories:

  • We help companies grow, create jobs and innovate by accessing and engaging in the U.S. capital markets throughout our issuers’ lifecycles as publicly-listed companies.
  •  We operate transparent, regulated exchanges matching buyers and sellers, providing liquidity and transparency for investing, trading, and managing risks across a range of instruments and asset classes.
  • And we offer an unmatched global network for our listed companies to demonstrate their roles as thought leaders, with government officials and key policy makers.

This morning was a great example of all three.

To start the day at the NYSE, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with our listed companies and global investment managers. Prime Minister Abe shared his perspective on the Japanese economy, regulation and foreign policy. While this was taking place, our trading floor was buzzing with two global IPOs - one from China and the other from Argentina.

BEST Inc. raised $450 million in what is the largest Chinese IPO so far this year. The Alibaba-backed company joins our dozens of listed companies from Greater China, which collectively represent a global market cap of over $1 trillion.

Latin America’s largest online travel booking destination, Despegar.com, also joined the ranks of publicly listed companies today with an IPO raising over $300 million. Based in Argentina and serving Central and South American consumers, Despegar’s IPO joins other recent e-commerce and travel IPOs by Latin American companies, including Netshoes and Azul Airlines.

For 225 years, the NYSE has been a meeting place for the world’s best and brightest entrepreneurs, government officials, business leaders, innovators and creators. It’s where global business meets to raise capital, invest and share ideas that help solve complex world problems. And every one of us who works at the NYSE is proud and honored to be part of this effort and looks forward to contributing to what will happen next.
