Hemophilia is the most common severe hereditary hemorrhagic disorder and can be life-threatening. Hemophilia A is caused by problems associated with factor VIII, whereas hemophilia B is related to factor IX. Both are more common than hemophilia C, caused by deficiency of factor XI, and acquired hemophilia, caused by the development of autoantibodies directed against plasma coagulation factors (most frequently factor VIII).
