Depression, one of the most common mental health disorders, affects more than 300 million people worldwide. Although significant on its own, depression is also associated with numerous other medical conditions and mental disorders, including bipolar disorder, dysthymia, dementia, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
For example, bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of deep, prolonged, and profound depression that alternate with periods of an excessively elevated or irritable mood (known as "mania"). A key aspect is that depression can be identified, diagnosed, and treated.
