Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, cardiologists, emergency medicine specialists, critical care specialists, pulmonologists, heart failure specialists, nurses, and perfusionists.

The goal of this activity is for learners to be better able to build awareness of the appropriate use of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation in appropriate patients who experience cardiac arrest.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge regarding the
    • Utilization of ECPR in cardiac arrest (CA) for patients refractory to conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
    • Evidence on the impact of ECPR on the survival of CA patient
  • Have greater competence related to
    • Selection of ideal patient for ECPR based on risk profile
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in their ability to
    • Collaborate with the interprofessional team around the use of effective algorithms/protocols to standardize the optimization of ECPR utilization across patient care settings
