Idiopathic hypersomnia is an increasingly prevalent chronic sleep disorder. It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing or nonrestorative nighttime sleep, and extreme difficulty awakening from sleep (ie, sleep inertia/sleep drunkenness), which is accompanied by feelings of grogginess and disorientation upon waking. Individuals with idiopathic hypersomnia often sleep for more than 11 hours out of every 24 hours each day. Without effective management, these individuals can encounter extreme personal and professional difficulties.
