Target Audience and Goal Statement

This activity is intended for anesthesiologists, pharmacists, primary care physicians, orthopedists/orthopedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians who treat patients with pain.

The goal of this activity is for learners to be better able to recognize when and for what types of chronic pain conditions opioid analgesics should be considered and appropriately utilize strategies for mitigating adverse events associated with the use of opioid analgesics for the management of chronic pain.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will:

  • Have increased knowledge regarding the
    • Clinical data on prescribing practices associated with opioid analgesics
    • Clinical data on opioid analgesics with features designed to reduce the occurrence of adverse events
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in their ability to
    • Identify patients with chronic pain who are appropriate candidates for opioid analgesic therapy
