Target Audience and Goal Statement

Psychiatry/mental health and primary care clinicians who manage patients with bipolar depression.

Seventy percent of patients with bipolar depression are misdiagnosed at their initial visit. This worsens their prognosis, results in mistreatment, decreased quality of life, and increased suicide risk. The symptoms of a bipolar depressive episode are identical to unipolar depression. Learn from James S. Manning, MD, and Sara Jones, PhD, APRN, as they discuss tools and strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize treatment. Additionally, the panel is joined by a surprise guest and further informed by a patient experience survey highlighting what matters most to patients.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Utilize established screening tools and diagnostic criteria to identify patients with bipolar depression
  • Individualize treatment for episodes of bipolar depression
