Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative microaerophilic bacterium that infects the lining of the stomach. It is the chief cause of chronic gastritis and the primary etiological agent for gastric cancer and peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Despite efforts to prevent H pylori infection and to eradicate it altogether, it remains a major global public health issue. Estimates suggest that half the world's population is infected with H pylori. Effective diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent the complications associated with H pylori infection.
