Clinical Trend of the Week (June 24-30): Sleep Apnea

Two new studies and revelations about a high-profile celebrity's death resulted in this week's top search term. A study in the journal Respirology found that men with insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are more likely to have symptoms of depression compared with men who have either disorder alone. Of the 700 mostly middle-aged men in the study, 43% who had both sleep apnea and insomnia had depression, compared with 22% who had insomnia alone and only 8% who had only sleep apnea. Meanwhile, recent results of an autopsy revealed that activist and actress Carrie Fisher's sleep apnea contributed to her untimely death. That revelation is particularly interesting in light of another study from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, which indicated that recurred exposure to metabolic changes associated with obstructive sleep apnea may foster diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Together, this trio of news items helped bring attention to a largely underrecognized but surprisingly common condition.
