As of October 2023, there have been over 770 million confirmed cases and over 6.9 million deaths worldwide directly attributed to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 is of the utmost importance for mitigating transmission and disease severity, and several effective vaccines across multiple platforms have been rolled out internationally.

Global collaboration has aimed to provide safe and effective vaccines that can help reduce the devastating impact of COVID-19 infection. While over 13.5 billion vaccine doses have been administered to date, the emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 have raised concerns about the efficacy of the currently used vaccines. Currently, several variants have emerged that might be better able to infect vaccinated individuals than previous SARS-CoV-2 viruses, yet vaccines continue to provide substantial protection against severe illness and death.

Currently available vaccines have been reformulated to better address variants of concern; are you up on the most current guidance about COVID-19 vaccines? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
